Road Bikes – Buyers Guide
Road Bikes Offer a Customized Approach to the Ride you Want
Today’s road bikes deliver a customized ride to any casual enthusiast or serious athlete. The range of equipment offered means that there are a variety of models that will fit your needs very precisely. So what is involved in finding the perfect cycle as you consider the dozens of quality bikes offered by the top of the line brands? This guide will offer several key tips that will help you narrow your search for the perfect bike.
First off, consider your budget. Since good used road bikes are available for under $500 while new road bikes can cost over $7,000 it is important going into your search to know what you plan to spend. There are some things to keep in mind that will help you save money. For example, you may get better value if you buy an older Giant or Trek bike than this year’s Cannondale, Specialize or LeMond. The older bike might need new rims or brakes but you’ll be better off putting some money into those road bikes once you own them. If the frame is in good condition and it is the style you want the brakes, seat, rims, tires and gearing can all be customized to suit your exact purposes. That way you pay for equipment you really want. Also, don’t overpay for road bikes you won’t get good use from. If you are buying a bike to use for pleasure and light recreation, or even moderately intense training, you probably don’t need to shop pro-quality road bikes to find the one for you.
However, if you goals include serious training or racing then one of the better new or used road bikes available will serve you much better. If you think you got a deal on a racing bike for example, but it won’t stand up to the rigors of climbing the hills, the torque that cornering produces or the load of braking hard going into downhill turns, you may have wasted your money.
Secondly, buy the type of bike that fits your purposes. Some road bikes are built for racing and some are designed as touring/casual use bikes. Good racing road bikes will be lighter, have an aerodynamically contoured seat, and will sport a setup that has your head and shoulders riding lower to the handlebars. Touring road bikes are designed for longer, less strenuous rides so have more comfortable seats and produce a more upright position for the rider.
Finally, be sure to select the accessories made for road bikes that will improve either your performance or the enjoyment you receive. These include water bottles, cushioned or gel seats, comfortable grips, carbon wheels or rims, and much more. Some forethought as you begin researching the road bikes available will help you buy the one that will give you the best bang for your biking buck.
