Hitting the open road on a quality cheap road bike is an awesome experience.  Whether the day’s agenda calls for serious training in the hills or a pleasure ride along the coast, hopping on a comfortable saddle with a reliable set of wheels under you is the recreational experience of choice for many of us.  If you’re shopping for a great new or used cheap road bike do you know what to look for?  Here are some tips for making your next purchase of a discount road bicycle one you’ll be happy with for years to come.

Your pursuit begins with knowing how you will use the bike.  If it’s to tour the neighborhood with the kids, with hard, strenuous rides being the exception, you’ll get by with a cheap road bike of average quality.  Choose a good brand like Trek or Cannondale and select one of their lower tier models or a bike that is old enough that you can get it at a discount road bike price.  An older cheap bike may need some repairs, but switching out tires or upgrading the brake mechanisms might be a great way to save money over purchasing a new bike.  You might prefer a touring bike if pleasure and general recreation are your goals.

Be sure to choose the right seat, often called a saddle, to meet your needs.  A touring saddle will be broader with more cushion to deliver comfort on longer rides.  A racing saddle is more streamlined so as not to get in the way when you’re on your toes and peddling hard on the incline.
